London Organising Committee Of The Olympic & Paralympic Games used the Anti-Doping Database
Before the London Olympic Summer Games in 2012, the organising committee contacted the anti-doping database to get data on athletes with a doping history.
The London Organising Committee Of The Olympic & Paralympic Games (LOCOG) approached the Anti-Doping Database to use us to do searches on athletes with a doping history.
LOCOG used the database before and after the Games. In the period before the Games, LOCOG spent a lot of time searching for athletes. They therefor asked us to create a feature where they could put in a list of athletes and return only those who had a doping verdict to their name.
We responded to this wish by creating the "Bulk search" which everyone now can use.
Used to identify athletes with an anti-doping violation
As the LOCOG sport presentation team were putting together video packages for each sport, they would present us with a list of athletes in the footage. The Anti-Doping department would then use your database to see if any of those athletes had an Anti-Doping Rule Violation.
If one was identified then the athlete would not be included in the packages. It was way to avoid any embarrassment.
The database was pivotal as it was a one stop shop to search for athletes rather than potentially having to go via each National Anti-Doping Organization website - which back then where not as reliable.
In short it made a huge resource saving in terms of the teams time spent on this task.
In the period after the Games, LOCOG used the Database when writing final reports.
The London Olympic Games
The Summer Olympics, held from July 27th to August 12th, 2012, featured 10,518 athletes, while the Paralympic Games, taking place from August 29th to September 9th, involved 4,302 athletes. A total of 204 nations were present.
The Anti-Doping program for London was big. In total 5,000 samples where collected. 492 of these were stored for re-analysis. As of January 2017 the number of sanctions issued was 37.
London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games on July 6, 2005, beating out cities like Moscow, New York, Madrid, and Paris. This made London the first city to host the Olympics three times, after previously hosting the games in 1908 and 1948.
USA topped the medal table by winning no less than 48 gold medals and 104 medals in overall. China finished second with 91 medals - 38 gold. Host nation Great Britain won 29 gold and 65 medals overall.
