American Karate Athlete Orbon Suspended 9 months for LGD-4033

USADA announced today that the karate-athlete Joane Orbon, has accepted a 9-month sanction. Orbin tested positive after using a contaminated supplement.

The American karate athlete Joane Orbon has been suspended after testing positive for di-hydroxy-LGD-4033, a metabolite of LGD-4033. The substance is classified as a non-Specified Substance in the class of Anabolic Agents and is prohibited at all times under various anti-doping protocols.

11th Athlete Suspended for LGD-4033

In the Anti-Doping Database, a total of 11 athletes have tested positive for LGD-4033. Orbon, the American athlete, has received one of the shortest suspensions for this substance. Notably, she is the third American athlete to test positive for LGD-4033. In 2016, Michael Buckley was suspended for four years, while Michael Gingras, a weightlifting coach, accepted a 12-year sanction for prohibited doping conduct.

First Case in 2019

Joane Orbon's suspension marks the first sanction related to LGD-4033 in 2019. In 2016, the year when LGD-4033 was first detected, two athletes—an American cyclist and a Serbian bodybuilder—received suspensions for using the substance. The following two years, 2017 and 2018, saw four incidents related to LGD-4033.

Facts Regarding LGD-4033

LGD-4033 is an investigational selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) developed by Viking Therapeutics and discovered by Ligand Pharmaceuticals. It is being studied for potential medical applications, such as treating muscle wasting and osteoporosis. However, its use as a performance-enhancing substance is prohibited under anti-doping regulations.
