Spanish Anti-Doping Appoints New General Director


The Spanish Anti-Doping Agency (CELAD) has appointed Silvia Calzón Fernandez as new general director.

 

According to news media the Spanish government demanded earlier in January that Jose Luis Terreros step down because of the "reputational damage" spanish sport and the agency had suffered as a result.

The Governing Council of the Spanish Commission for the Fight against Doping in Sports (CELAD) has approved in its meeting this Friday the appointment of Silvia Calzón as general director of the organization. Silvia Calzón is a doctor specializing in Preventive Medicine and Public Health.

She was Secretary of State for Health between August 2020 and November 2023, a period in which she managed the worst moments of the pandemic and the coordination of the vaccination campaign. She was appointed at the proposal of the president of the Governing Council of CELAD, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, who has valued her academic training, her professional career and her demonstrated management capacity as a senior official. 

Doctor from the University of Granada, within the Official Doctoral Program in Economics and Business Sciences, she completed her academic training with a Master in Public Health and Health Management (University of Granada-Andalusian School of Public Health), a Master in Economics from the Health and Medicine (Pompeu Fabra University) and a Specialization Diploma in Gender and Health (University of Granada-Andalusian School of Public Health).

The new director of CELAD has developed her research work mainly linked to the study of social inequalities in health, participating in different research projects. She is a Primary Care Epidemiologist, with a permanent statutory staff position in the Seville Health District (Andalusian Health Service). In the field of health management, she has held the position of Manager of the Health Management Areas South of Córdoba and South of Seville of the Andalusian Health Service.

With a degree in Medicine from the University of Seville, Silvia Calzón is a specialist in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. 

She has obtained a doctorate in the official Program of Economics and Business Sciences at the University of Granada, in the Department of Applied Economics, with the thesis 'The impact of the economic crisis and unemployment on health', in which he received the grade of outstanding cum laude.

In this aspect, she has continued her research work, focused on the relationship between social factors in health aspects. She also has a Master's degree in Public Health and Health Management from the Andalusian School of Public Health and a Master's degree in Health Economics and Medicine from the Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona 2008).

Her resume also includes more than a dozen publications and scientific documents and more than thirty communications and presentations, both nationally and internationally.
